You’re Next (USA 2013)
4 out of 5
The Davison clan is having a family reunion in honor of the parents’ 35th wedding anniversary. Crispian (AJ Bowen) has brought his significant other Erin (Sharni Vinson) to meet his family and warns her things might get uncomfortable. Petty family tensions turn out to be the least of their troubles when masked killers hunt the family down while Erin proves herself to be an asset, to put it mildly. You’re Next is uproariously funny at times with great moments of astutely observed family dynamics: putting an entire family in danger in this way is very successful. The twists were not wildly surprising and the overuse of the shaky cam was tiring, but these minor gripes were not detrimental to the film as a whole which is a testament to the films’ winning qualities. A thrilling score and one of the most impressive, resourceful female characters in horror to date makes You’re Next a great time at the movies; proving that home invasion slasher films still pack a punch when done right.
